When does a phone become “not worth repairing”?

This Optus X Start 3 gave us a good reminder that the answer isn't always about the value of the phone itself.

The customer had already visited a few phone repair shops before coming to Fonestop and had been told that the device wasn't worth repairing. From a purely financial point of view, it was understandable — this is a basic telco-supplied phone, and the cost involved in repairing it could easily exceed the price of buying another phone.

But when the customer came to us for another opinion, the first thing we did was listen.

The customer wasn't asking us whether buying another Optus X Start 3 would be cheaper. What mattered was getting this particular phone working again, with the information stored on it still there.

That changes the conversation completely.

We explained what would be involved in repairing the phone, what the likely cost would be, and importantly, that the repair could cost considerably more than the replacement value of the device itself.

With all of that understood, the customer decided to go ahead.

So we repaired it.

At the end of the job, the customer walked away with a working phone and their data intact.

For us, this is an important part of offering phone repairs in Ballarat. We don't believe that the retail value of a device should automatically decide whether it deserves to be repaired.

Sometimes repairing an older or inexpensive phone genuinely doesn't make financial sense, and we'll tell our customers when that's the case. But there are also times when the contents of a phone — photos, contacts, messages, memories or other important information — are worth far more to its owner than the hardware holding them.

Our job isn't to decide that value for the customer.

Our job is to explain what is possible, what it will cost, and let them make an informed decision.

In this case, an inexpensive Optus phone that had already been considered “not worth repairing” was absolutely worth repairing to its owner.
